Men like Harry Patch: the World War One veteran who’s insight into the friendship, compassion and brutality of war he eloquently shared towards the end of his life. Harry’s voice is featured on this track. This is the story of three soldiers of the Gloucestershire Regiment the “Glorious Glosters” who regimental motto is “By our deeds we are known“ Ordinary men from an extraordinary generation.

lyrics

Tommy was a miner
He worked a Gale down in the Dean
Hewing coal for a coin or two
Pickaxe to the seam
They sent him mining in Flanders Fields
To tunnel way down to the core
Now he’s just a name on a cross in the town
Who never came back from the war

Chorus
We’re the lads in the glorious Glosters
And by our deeds we will be known
We’re the miner, the teacher and ploughboy
And when this jobs done We’re coming back home

Annie sits close to the lamplight
To read a letter she’s read times before
There’s a photo there to remind her
Of a husband who’s lost to the war
They sent her his medals, which seemed poor return
For a life that had barely begun
She keeps them next to the cradle
So father can watch over son

You can see us in the summer sun
We cast our shadows ‘cross the corn
We’re in the breath of new born life
The birdsong of the dawn
We’re the seeds that scatter on the breeze
We’re every leaf and bud and spore
So remember us those boys and men
Who went to fight that bloody war

May 31st 1916
The stretchers come back from the line
An MO says "count yourself lucky old son
You might walk again given time"
They gave Jack his ticket to Blighty
And carried him down from the train
Now he’s back on the farm in the county
But he won’t go ploughing again
